HMS Niger and sister ships Speedy, Circe, Jason, Leda and Hebe were converted to Minesweepers in 1908/1909. Hebe was almost immediately converted to a Submarine Depot Ship. Niger and sister ships Speedy, Circe, Jason, Leda and Hebe were converted to Minesweepers in 1908/1909. Hebe was almost immediately converted to a Submarine Depot Ship.

Prior to being converted to a Minesweeper, Niger had been tender to HMS Vernon, training establishment, Portsmouth (Naval Torpedo School).

HMS Niger was torpedoed by a Submarine, while at anchor off Deal, on the 11 November, 1914. The ship was abandoned and the crew taken off by the Deal and Kingsdown lifeboats, watched by hundreds of people on the shore, then exploded. There were no casualties.
